Prenatal Vitamins
Prenatal vitamins are an essential part of any pregnant woman’s diet. Even with the most healthy and nutritious of diets our bodies may not get all of the key nutrients it needs during pregnancy. Supplementation is a great way to ensure that your body gets all the vital nutrients it needs to support a healthy and happy baby.
This prenatal duo is chock full of essential vitamins such as calcium, iron, folic acid , vitamin D, and omega 3 fatty acids which are all key nutrients for fetal development. Iron is a vitamin best known for preventing anemia, which is a deficiency that impacts the red blood cells. Folic acid is known to prevent neural tube defects. Omega 3 fatty acids aide in developing a baby’s brain. Vitamin D and Calcium help with developing strong bones. As your body changes through out the progression of your pregnancy, it is important to remember that vitamins are never to take place of eating wholesome meals but are there to ensure that your body is getting all of the nutrients it needs to carry and care for baby while they are in the womb. And as always make sure to speak with your medical provider to ensure that any supplement is right for you.
1 Gallon Motivational Water Bottle
Hydration is SUPREME during pregnancy. During the first trimester it can be easy to overlook your water intake especially if morning sickness has your tummy feeling sour, but I implore you to drink-more-water.The Institute of Medicine informs pregnant women to drink at least 10, 8 ounce glasses of water a day or other fluids that contain water Yes ladies you did the math correctly that is 80 ounces of fluid intake! A word to the wise, although juices count toward your fluid intake they can be calorically dense and spike glucose readings.
It is easy to lose sight of our fluid intake throughout the day. In order to keep yourself focused on maintaining a well hydrated body I suggest getting a 1 gallon motivational water bottle like this one. The bottle has time frames clearly printed on the body with each time having a motivational phrase to help remind you to drink up.
Ginger Drops
As your hormone levels rise, morning sickness may have you feeling a bit tummy sour. Your stomach may be unpredictable during the first trimester which could have you feeling like your stomach is on a rinse cycle. It is super important to have something that is easily accessible that will provide you with relief during an impromptu bout of nausea. I always kept ginger chews or drops like these in my purse in case I was hit with a sudden onset of queasiness.
Morning Sickness Tea
There is nothing like a good cup of tea to help you when you are not feeling your best. Drinking this tea hot or cold gets you to hit two birds with one stone by aiding in your hydration and also calming the nausea often caused by the surge of hormones your body goes through during the first trimester. This caffeine free brew allows you to indulge any time of day, as morning sickness is really a misnomer and can happen at any point in the day or night.
Sea-Band Wrist Bands
The feeling of nausea (and sometimes vomiting) can come at any point of the day and the severity of the sensation can vary. Acupressure, the practice of using applied pressure to acupuncture points on the body can alleviate nausea so that you don’t feel like a land lover stuck at sea. The practice is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and has been widely used in order to assist with nausea.
Seas-Band wristbands can be placed on the wrists with the plastic stud facing the inside of the wrist. This will apply pressure to the P6 (Nei Kuan) pressure point which has been known to alleviate the feelings of nausea and motion sickness. The bands have undergone clinical testing with evidence providing proof in their effectiveness regarding symptom relief. Sea-Band wristbands are reusable, washable, and do not have side effects.
Granola Snack Bars
When you’re feeling nauseous the last thing you want to do is even look at food, but eating small meals throughout the day can help combat the queasiness. Neglecting to eat will cause dips in your blood sugar and can exacerbate your symptoms. Having something to snack on throughout the day will help keep the dry heaves at bay, assist with fatigue, and help the moodiness that one experiences when their hunger has reached the hangry stage.
I am obsessed with Madagascar, Vanilla Almond, and Honey bars by This Saves Lives. The bars are super tasty and pack a punch regarding flavor while still managing to keep the caloric intake of each bar under 200 calories. They are responsibly sourced, non-gmo, gluten free, and dairy free ensuring that your body gets a dose of healthy food staples like almonds and flax seeds. Even more rewarding is that each bar purchased helps provide a meal for a starving child.
Bra Extenders
Hormonal changes mean major changes for your breasts which can have you feeling like your bra is digging into your skin. To help with the fluctuation in size Bra Extenders like these are a great life hack that can easily be thrown in a purse in case your back and your bra need some relief. The extenders will also help with the longevity of wearing your regular bras by simply hooking the extender onto a bras attached hooks.
Wireless Bras
As your body goes through hormonal fluctuations your breasts may feel sore or tender, and can be extremely uncomfortable. Standard bras with an underwire may cause pinching as your breasts begin to change. Sore breasts made me grouchy and although I was reluctant to give up my cute perfectly cupped t-shirt bras, I gave into my discomfort and bought a pack of seamless wireless bras. This decision: Changed. My. Life. These wireless bras provide the perfect amount of support while giving your breast a really nice shape. I love how they are lightly padded to shield the world from seeing your nipples through your shirt, but love even more that the padding is part of the bra so that you don’t have to deal with floating pads that pop in and out or get misshapen over time.
Soft Comfy Leggings
Comfort is key during the first trimester. Mamas can experience a variety of symptoms including bloating and more frequent urination. Indulge in the luxury of a pair of buttery soft leggings. These bad boys have a flexible waste band that will grow along with your bump and are high wasted to provide you with a little extra support. Coupled with a loose tunic you can hang or work in style without having to feel the annoying pressing or chaffing of a waste band.
Mindful Birthing: Training the Mind, Body, and Heart for Childbirth and Beyond
After the initial shock of finding out I was pregnant, my thoughts become consumed with the fear of giving birth. Having been visually assaulted by the over exaggerated birth scenes in movies and television shows, I had a distorted perception about the idea of birth. I held onto the belief that birth is painful, involved agonizing screaming, and was extremely dramatic. As a person who tries to engage in mindfulness throughout their life i knew I had to kick the irrational fears that were giving me anxiety to the curb. It was the first few months and time literally seemed to come to a crawl as I worried every day about what birth would be like for me. I knew something had to change so I entered the words “mindful birth” into the Amazon search bar and immediately, Mindful Birthing: Training the Mind, Body, ad Heart for Childbirth and Beyond had popped up at the top of the results page.
This book had such an impact on helping me realize that through practicing mindful techniques I could overcome my fears and have the natural birth that I truly desired. It was through reading the chapters of this book that I learned to substitute the word pain for pressure and learned to trust my body to do the job that it was meant to do.
Even though you may not see changes in your body immediately during the first trimester, the hormonal changes that you will encounter can lead to some discomfort. Having things that will provide you with immediate relief will help curb your symptoms so you can focus on health and wellness for you and your baby. Remember that even though this is just the start of your pregnancy journey, that you are now a mom and that every moment from now on will be a Mommentous Moment!
